The main focus of the Maintenance Worker II – Electronics is to assist journeyman trades with requests from Division sites pertaining to electronic maintenance projects or modernization projects on Division property. Responsibilities include electronic system installations such as Smartboard installation and configurations, projector installation and service calls, classroom sound-field system installations and repairs, network cabling installations, security system installations, access control installations. The incumbent will also assist with journeyman trades persons in the department to complete more technical installations and repairs.

The job assists department staff with wire and electronic systems installations and maintenance or repairs, including inventory control, storage and transportation of supplies, materials and equipment and facilitating and coordinating with project participants.

The job works as part of various teams in completing projects and activities. The work is carried out using a variety of hand tools and power equipment. The work varies considerably depending on unit served. The job works with minimal supervision after receiving direction from the assigned supervisor.

Work is performed within the Division/department policies and procedures and is guided by electronic, construction and maintenance standards and principles and those established by the department. Work is completed in compliance with the Alberta Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) legislation, regulations, guidelines and the Division’s goals and objectives. The work is performed in compliance with Alberta Traffic Laws.

There is considerable discretion exercised by this job in the performance of its regular duties. Assistance and/or guidance is readily available from the project supervisor.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Project management

  • Handle inventory control including purchasing, receiving, shipping and categorizing supplies, materials and equipment
  • Store and transport supplies, materials and equipment in the most efficient method to complete the work
  • Assist department staff with a variety of projects and provide cover-off during absences
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor

Maintenance and repairs

  • Assist in the management of a preventive maintenance program and the assessment of existing electronic systems for modernization
  • Perform electronic system installations and light repair work and assist technical department staff
  • Replace lamps and clean filters and reset parameters on video projectors
  • Check for tripped circuit breakers and burnt fuses
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs on classroom AV systems and other electronic systems as needs arise
  • Erect and dismantle scaffolding as required/directed
  • Report any problems identified during work project to the assigned supervisor – may determine alternatives for corrective action and present recommendations to supervisor for resolution
  • Assist in the cleanup of worksites
  • Ensure tools and equipment are operating properly and report those that are not
  • Ensure worksites are clean and maintained within safety standards

Building security

  • Ensure equipment and tools are safely operated and stored at all times
  • Ensure supplies and materials are monitored and safely stored at all times
  • Secure building as required and depending on worksite requirements

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or equivalent and Certification in Computer Sciences or other Electronics related field would be an asset

  • Experience with low voltage cabling techniques, electronic systems installation and repairs acquired through trade related training or experience
  • Three years of experience working in the construction industry
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in related electronic fields
  • Knowledge of inventory control principles
  • General understanding of basic construction and maintenance techniques
  • Knowledge of the safe use of power and manual tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of the Alberta Building Code, OHS regulations and legislation including working in confined spaces
  • Knowledge of regulations governing WHMIS and TDG is required
  • Knowledge of department and unit policies, procedures, business and operations
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft programs – Word, Excel, Outlook and the Internet is required; knowledge of electronic attendance system is an asset
  • Strong problem solving and time management skills and the ability to balance work demands and priorities
  • Ability to exercise tact, courtesy and good judgment when dealing with other trades, school principals, teachers, students, co-workers and the general public
  • Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Physically able to complete the duties of the Job using appropriate tools and techniques (constantly lifting up to 30Kg/66lbs)
  • Fluency in the English language including both oral and written communication skills is mandatory
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license and the ability to travel to various sites within Edmonton
  • Ability to provide a clean driver’s abstract upon hire and as requested
