Job Description

Position Summary

The Fishing Guide is responsible for delivering exceptional guided fishing experiences for guests at Shoal Lake Lodge while ensuring safety, professionalism and a strong connection to the land and waters of Shoal Lake. This role is central to guest satisfaction and plays a key part in representing the lodge’s reputation for high-quality angling, hospitality and Anishinaabe stewardship.

The Fishing Guide will work closely with the Lodge Manager to support daily operations, assist with guest services, and contribute to an unforgettable lodge experience. This position requires a knowledgeable, personable and safety conscious professional with strong fishing expertise and excellent interpersonal skills.

Key Responsibilities

1. Guided Fishing & Guest Experiences

  • Lead guided fishing excursions for species such as northern pike, musky and bass.
  • Provide instruction on fishing techniques, equipment use, and local water for anglers of varying skill levels.
  • Ensure guests have a safe, enjoyable and memorable experience on the water.
  • Share knowledge of Shoal Lake’s ecosystem, conservation practices and Anishinaabe perspectives on land and water stewardship.
  • Assist guests with equipment setup, lure selection and fish handling.

2. Safety & Risk Management

  • Operate boats safely and professionally in all weather and water conditions.
  • Enforce all boating, safety and emergency protocols.
  • Monitor guest wellbeing during trips and respond appropriately to emergencies.
  • Maintain valid boating certification, CPR and First Aid (or willingness to obtain).
  • Ensure compliance with fishing regulations, licensing requirements and lodge policies.

3. Equipment & Asset Care

  • Inspect, clean, and maintain boats, motors, electronics and fishing equipment.
  • Report maintenance issues or safety concerns promptly.
  • Support dock operations, fueling procedures, and equipment storage protocols.
  • Assist with seasonal setup and shut down of boats and guiding equipment.

4. Operations & Team Support

  • Coordinate daily trip schedules with lodge management and other staff on the island.
  • Support dock operations or lodge logistics during peak periods.
  • Contribute to a positive, respectful team environment.

5. Marketing & Guest Engagement

  • Act as a front-line ambassador for Shoal Lake Lodge and IIFN39 Holdings Inc.
  • Support lodge marketing through guest photos, testimonials and storytelling where appropriate.
  • Encourage repeat bookings by building strong guest relationships and delivering exceptional service.
  • Represent the lodge professionally when interacting with guests, partners and visitors.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience as a fishing guide or equivalent angling experience.
  • Strong knowledge of freshwater fishing techniques and local species.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Experience operating boats and navigating large lake systems.
  • Familiarity with remote or lodge-based operations is an asset.
  • Understanding of Indigenous culture, community-owned tourism and conservation values is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and Pleasure Craft Operator Card (boating license).
  • CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.

Working Conditions

  • Occasional travel to the mainland and regional offices required.
  • Must be available during peak summer season for in-season work.
